Difference Between cPanel and WHM

Updated on August 3, 2024

Web Host Manager, or WHM, is a powerful tool that allows administrative access to the back end of multiple cPanel accounts, Not only does it allow you to manage individual accounts, but you can also set server-side limits and gives full control over multi-site management. WHM functions via 2087 as its secure port number.

WHM (WebHost Manager) is a reseller control panel tailor-made for a reseller to provide administrative control. It gives a hosting provider flexibility to manage and control the back end of multiple cPanel accounts.

In WHM, you can:

Create, Delete, or Suspend individual cPanel Accounts
Customize and brand your hosting service
Set custom hosting packages
Add domains to the server
Reset passwords for cPanel accounts/email addresses
Edit Resource Limits across multiple cPanel accounts
Modify DNS zone records for each domain and/or subdomain
Configure private nameservers on the server
Access and change anything in cPanel accounts without entering login details
Perform control panel and basic system maintenance
Configure customers’ support requests through cPanel
Create a default page when you create a new account.

The privileges of the reseller are set by the server administrator, there is a limit to what a reseller can do with WHM as some functions are not available to them compared to when he has VPS which has root access privileges.

Reseller accounts get WHM, while VPS accounts get root WHM (which has features that require root access to the server enabled). Resellers can not have root access.

cPanel is a control panel used by end users to manage their own hosting accounts, it only provides access to web hosting accounts on the server to its users. After purchasing a web hosting package of your choice, every user is given a tool to manage their hosting service which is called the cPanel

cPanel is the control panel used by the end users under a reseller of hosting provider, it is designed for managing separate hosting accounts on the server.

cPanel allows account users to perform tasks including:
Publish a website
Account file management
Install web applications using Softaculous
Upload, Backup, transfer and manage files for their websites
Manage domains add/remove addon domains and subdomains
Create email accounts and manage email settings and SPAM protection
Edit DNS records for their domains
Monitor website statistics and backups

cPanel functions via 2083 as its secure port number. The password for cPanel can be set by the end user.

cPanel and WHM have characteristics that are quite distinct from one another. They work closely together but have differences which benefit end users and resellers, but at the same time maintain a difference.
