FFMPEG Support

Updated on August 1, 2024

FFMPEG is installed and available to use on all of our hosting systems. The FFMPEG binary version is provided by our Linux package installer, and unfortunately is not possible to change this on our shared hosting systems for standardization purposes, however this can be changed on our dedicated hosting servers.

Creating a video hosting site used to be a difficult and complex endeavour, but the power and flexibility of FFmpeg allow users to easily convert video into formats, including MPEG-4 and Flash, that are suitable for a wide range of mobile and desktop devices. Once converted, video and audio can be streamed using FFmpeg’s media player.

FFmpeg is a free and open-source collection of tools and libraries that allows users to record, convert, and stream video and audio in different types of formats. These tools are extremely useful in optimizing files for online sharing and streaming.

FFmpeg offers a cross-platform software capable of streaming, converting and recording video and audio. Asides from conversions to and from any media type, FFmpeg also supports basic editing(so you or your users can resize, resample, or change the aspect ratio of content to fit the requirements of your site).

You can use FFmpeg to play, stream, decode, encode, and manipulate all kinds of multimedia, it is used for processing audio and video data. Listed Hosting supports FFmpeg streaming on our shared servers for your video-sharing applications.

FFmpeg’s popularity stems from its accessibility, you do not have to know much about multimedia formats, all you need to do is simply upload whatever video you have captured from your mobile device or camera, and FFmpeg converts it to a file format which will play in any modern web browser.

FFmpeg allows users to upload the video to your website in all of the most popular video formats, and convert them on the server side into what you can with full High Definition video. YouTube video is an end result of FFmpeg.

How does FFmpeg work?

Once your video-sharing application has been installed, you can upload a video to your site.
FFmpeg will convert the video to a video file(which is similar to the type of file you see when streaming from sites like Vevo, Vimeo, Youtube, etc.) on the server. This automatically embeds the video in your web pages and your users can embed your video on their websites or share it through social networking.

FFmpeg can manage the web hosting resources for websites that host multimedia content. However, if you already have a large video-sharing website or are planning on having a large site, we suggest a Managed cloud server.
